Super stretchy for leaning over the gunwale to land those pesky rat kingfish, quick-drying after unscheduled dips overboard to untangle braid from the propeller, a spot for your fishing pliers, and even magnetised pockets to stop your phone bailing out on you during that big session at Swashbucklers.
The crewman shorts have been a part of our uniform aboard the Hauraki Express boats for a number of years now and the recent release cargo shorts are top-notch! The four-way stretch is ideal when jumping around the boat or for celebratory high kicks. Not to mention the endless pocket space and magnets to keep everything safe and secure in those pockets, Genius!
I’ve been living in my trusty crewman shorts all season. From North Cape to Kona they have been the perfect fishing short - with 4 way stretch combined with their quick-drying properties ensures all-day comfort and they are hard wearing and easy to clean, perfect for multi-day fishing adventures. I’m a big fan of the magnetic closures on the pockets which I’m sure has saved my phone on more than one occasion! They’re not out of place at the game club either, my favourite piece of apparel!

I almost shied away from including these in my 5 Salty Essentials, purely because of the numerous mentions they have received already. Truth is, if these weren’t on the list I would be flat out lying. I’m yet to find a pair of shorts that matches the functionality and comfort that the crewman short offers. Without a doubt, if I am fishing, these are what I’m wearing.
