Five Salty Essentials ~ Jordy Bardin

INTRODUCING
JORDY BARDIN

Born and bred on the Coromandel, fishing, diving and surfing with my old man. The passion for the ocean has moulded my lifestyle and career. I studied Marine Science and then went on to work as a deckhand on Akura Fishing Charters in Rarotonga.

Diving was always my calling and getting more in to spearfishing over the years, I was lucky enough to dive with some of the best in NZ (and the world) and become part of the South Seas Spearo family. I have now got my foot in the door with commercial diving, helping Tim at Ocean Speared and also completing my commercial diving aquaculture COC, harvesting geoducks.

HARBOURAGE JACKET 2.0

The conditions are harsh out there on the water and it’s often hard to keep dry and warm. A quality jacket is essential to any seafarer and this one is the best I’ve got my mitts on so far! Not only completely waterproof and windproof but also breathable, great for layering and plenty of handy pockets. It’s never far from my reach.

YETI DRINKWARE

I cannot stress how incredible these mugs are!! They lock in the heat so well, it’s actually bloody hard to cool your boiling cuppa down! Spill proof and hardy, it comes everywhere with me. There’s nothing like a warm brew on those cold early mornings or after a dive. Hydration is also huge, especially with diving. I carry my Yeti bottle everywhere with me.

ANGLER TECH UPF40 LS FISHING TOPS

Those summer days on the briny can be brutal. From fishing under the harsh NZ sun to working full time in the tropics game fishing, you gotta cover up. These long sleeves are a life saver, being breathable and cool enough to wear in any heat, preventing you from getting scorched.

GARMIN DESCENT Mk2S

A good dive watch is great for improving your recreational diving but I have found it especially handy now that I am diving commercially. This model is super small making it easy to wear on my small wrists and it does absolutely everything (in and out of the water). The features that are essential for me and my diving is the compass, surface time, depth and of course the dive logs where it saves all the data from each dive

BEUCHAT MAXLUX MASK

Finding a comfy, well fitting, quality mask is an essential piece of kit for any diver. Fortunately for me, the Beuchat MAXLUX is just that. Due to different face shapes, one mask will not fit all so it’s crucial to try a few out. The pro’s with this mask is the super soft silicone, the low volume and the single lens giving you an incredible field of vision. Plus the huge range of colours are awesome, I use a bright red snorkel so I’m more visible on the surface, making it easy for the skipper to find me!
