FIVE SALTY ESSENTIALS WITH: BEN STARNS - FISHING MARKETING COORDINATOR (DAIWA)

You would have seen his handsome smile in some of our more recent campaigns, not only is Ben a good friend of ours, but he is also a very talented Angler & photographer. Here are five Salty Essentials that Ben can’t leave home with-out.

JAF UV TECH LS TEE
One thing I have come to really appreciate is simplicity, even more so when the product in question is so good that the need to make decisions is largely irrelevant. At 3 am in the morning the question of what shirt to wear is something I quite simply don’t need to deal with, and the JAF range of UV Tech LS Tees makes that decision particularly simple. For someone with fair skin that burns with relative ease, these things are literally a lifesaver - long sleeves, UPF 40 sun protection, lightweight, moisture-wicking, the list goes on, but I’m sure you get the idea.

OAKLEY LATCH SUNGLASSES
I don’t know about everyone else, but for me, there is almost nothing worse than realising you’re too far from home to turn around, and that you’ve forgotten your sunnies. A good pair of sunglasses are a must when spending long periods of time on the water. Not only do they need to look and feel good, but also perform well in some pretty challenging conditions - my current go-to is the Oakley Latch paired with Prism lenses. These things go with me just about everywhere, on and off the water. An easy-going frame combined with some stunning optics - you simply can’t go wrong.

BIRKENSTOCK ARIZONA SANDALS
Summer is pretty much synonymous with jandals, and I doubt that will change anytime soon. But since upgrading to the tourist sandals I haven’t looked back and doubt I ever will. Birkenstock’s Arizona sandals go anywhere and everywhere, in fact, I think you would be hard-pressed to find an occasion where they aren’t appropriate - you can even wear them with socks! On the boat, off the boat, at the beach, in the bach, even the dreaded public toilet - these things are so damn comfortable and versatile they just make your life that little bit easier.

DAIWA SALTIGA SPINNING REELS
Okay, so an early disclaimer - I work for Daiwa. But that doesn’t change anything at all. The Daiwa Saltiga 5000H is the first bit of kit I’ll reach for 9 times out of 10. Being obsessed with casting for Kingfish is a pretty slippery slope as I’m sure some of you know all too well, but this thing has paid for itself many times over. Having been on countless topwater missions - it's never skipped a beat. It works so faultlessly that I often forget about it, but that’s what makes it so special - the sense of carelessness, and the freedom it allows to simply enjoy fishing.

CARPENTER GAMMA STICKBAITS
Speaking of slippery slopes, this would have to be right up there - my ever-growing collection of Carpenter lures. While they might be expensive, there is definitely one thing they do better than anything else, and that is catching Kingfish. Having already invested so much time and energy I want to make sure I have every chance of landing a good fish, and to that end, the Carpenter Gamma is often the first lure in the water. Watching a Gamma sliding gracefully across the surface, nothing else seems to matter and there isn’t a care in the world.
